COVID-19: Pandemic Hits Gateway
Senait Kifle, right, stands with her daughter, Fiori Bourdon, 12, while outside Gateway Care and Rehabilitation Center as they speak with a staff member during an attempt to see Kifle's father on Tuesday, April 21, 2020, in Hayward, Calif. Kifle's 81-year-old dad, Ghebremichael Ghebreselasie, has tested positive for COVID-19 while recovering from hip surgery at Gateway. Since she first became aware of her father’s condition, Kifle has made numerous calls to the facility and Alameda County officials — all have gone unanswered, she told The Chronicle. Kifle is hoping her father gets the care he needs.
“This is a nightmare,” Kifle said while trying to connect to a staff member at the facility. “What a battle.”
The facility currently has thirteen COVID-19 related deaths that prompted an investigation by the Alameda County district attorney’s office. Gateway also has 102 cases related to the novel coronavirus with 69 patients and 33 staff members infected.
