  • Childhood friends Gabriel Cano, 42, left, and Moose Saberi, 44, relax following a cheeseburger dinner at Saberi's shed at the Wood St. encampment in Oakland, Calif., on Saturday, October 10, 2020. Saberi has been unsheltered between 4-5 years. Led by the Life Enrichment Committee, the Oakland city council is going to vote on Oct. 20 on a new, restrictive encampment management policy that would designate where homeless people can and can't set up camp. The policy called the "Homeless Encampment Management Policy" currently has a few of the following guidelines: encampment footprint shall not exceed 12x12 square feet per person; no illegal electrical taps; no storage of tires, gasoline, generators, propane tanks or other combustible materials; and encampments can't be within 150 feet of a school or within 50 feet of a protected waterway, residence, business, playground, a public park, soccer field, baseball field, basketball court, tennis court, or golf course. "I think it's interesting that instead of trying to solve the homeless problem, they're trying to shuffle the problem or issue. In effect, crippling or strangling any help or resources that we do have to maintain what we have or go beyond," Saberi said. "I think they should consider the fact that our safety and our well being, our successes, is in the hands of a lot of these programs and a lot of the support networks that we have with each other. They're going to be strangling that out with these ridiculous and impossible measures that they're trying to impose."

"He loved Oakland so much. So, now he's going back to the community that he loved," Fredrika Newton said. "It's kind of hard to land in the feelings when I'm really involved in so much planning, but in the quieter moments when I do get to access feelings, when I think of it, it brings me to tears, really. So, this weekend is, it's emotional because I have to let this beautiful image of him sit alone in a median strip and just pray that the community protects him with the same love and respect and reverence that he protected the community. So, it's a mixed bag. I feel on a very personal level that it's a really big step towards my own grief and healing, even after 32 years, it still exists because I never really let him go."
