• Jaime Patiño, 48, poses for a portrait in his home on Thursday, April 23, 2020, in Union City, Calif. Patiño's late grandmother, Emma Patiño, became the 11th victim to die from COVID-19 on April 13th at Gateway Care and Rehabilitation Center in Hayward, Calif.
Patiño said Gateway still hasn’t released his grandmother’s medical records, despite the family’s multiple attempts to retrieve them. She was relatively healthy prior to this, Patiño said. His family thinks the ailments registered at the hospital should have been detected sooner at Gateway, and as earlier diagnoses could have made a difference.

“Had we known about the seriousness of what was going on there, we could have got her on some proactive measures, even bring her home,” Patiño said. “There was no way for us to know.”
