His Name In Lights
The Death of Darrius Stewart
July 21, 2015 - Bennett Foster (center), an organizer with Mid-South Peace & Justice Center, bows his head in prayer during a vigil honoring Darrius Stewart at New Direction Youth Campus in Hickory Hill. Stewart, 19, was fatally shot by Memphis police officer Connor Schilling, 26, after a traffic stop on July 17.
About 150 people gathered at Winchester near Pine Tree, where candles were lit spelling his name and some in the crowd wore shirts reading “#CuffEmDontShoot.”
“I want the people of Memphis to stand up,” said Stewart’s aunt, Teri Stewart. “Everybody has a Darrius Stewart.” (Yalonda M. James/The Commercial Appeal)
