COVID-19: Pandemic Hits Gateway
Senate Kifle poses for a portrait at her home on Tuesday, April 21, 2020, in Oakland, Calif. Kifle's 81-year-old father, Ghebremichael Ghebreselasie, has tested positive for COVID-19 while recovering from hip surgery at Gateway Care and Rehabilitation Center in Hayward. Since she first became aware of her father’s condition, Kifle has made numerous calls to the facility and Alameda County officials — all have gone unanswered, she told The Chronicle. Kifle is hoping her father gets the care he needs.
“I feel like it’s the Twilight Zone,” Kifle said. “Nobody can go and rescue a patient. I feel like my dad is in jail — the system put him in that.”
The facility currently has thirteen COVID-19 related deaths that prompted an investigation by the Alameda County district attorney’s office. Gateway also has 102 cases related to the novel coronavirus with 69 patients and 33 staff members infected.
