Jaime Patiño, a council member for Union City, lowers his head as he visits his 84-year-old grandmother, Emma Patiño, at Gateway Care and Rehabilitation, located at 26660 Patrick Ave., on Wednesday, April 8, 2020, in Hayward, Calif. "I didn't want her to see me break down," Patiño said. He heard about the six deaths at the facility while watching the news Wednesday afternoon and hurried to see his grandmother - from her window. "When a loved one is in that situation, it comes close to home," Patiño said. He also shared that his grandmother was physically healthy and in good spirits during his visit. Emma Patiño passed away the following Monday evening, becoming the 11th patient to die at the facility.
